What goes into the PDF

The DXF’s model space, read entity by entity: LINE, LWPOLYLINE and the older POLYLINE with its VERTEX records, ARC, CIRCLE, ELLIPSE, SPLINE, SOLID, 3DFACE, LEADER and MLINE all become vector strokes on one page. Polyline bulges are drawn as true arcs, not chords. A closed polyline stays closed; an open one stays open, which is worth checking on a cut file before it goes anywhere.

TEXT and MTEXT are set in the standard PDF fonts with their height, rotation and justification; a paragraph wraps to the width the MTEXT was given. DIMENSION entities print from their stored geometry block, so the measurement text is the one your CAD wrote. INSERTs are expanded with scale, rotation and attributes. HATCH fills are painted when solid and outlined when they are a pattern. Layers that are off, frozen or non-plotting are omitted, and colour 7 — the “ink” colour that is white on a dark screen — is printed as dark grey so the drawing does not disappear on paper.

When to use it

A DXF is a working file: it goes into a laser, a plasma table, a router, a plotter or another CAD. A PDF is a reading file. You want the second when the recipient should look and not touch — a customer approving a sign, a supplier quoting a bracket, a colleague checking a survey on a phone — or when you need a snapshot of what was sent on a given day that nobody can edit. Because this dxf to pdf converter keeps the geometry as vectors, the PDF is also a decent way to print a drawing on an office printer without opening CAD.

It is not a substitute for plotting. There is no scale, no layout, no title block, and nothing should be measured off the page. For those, open the DXF in the DXF viewer and use the CAD’s plot.

Limits

  • 100 MB per file and 60 seconds per conversion. DXF is text, so a 100 MB file is a very large drawing; most exports are under a megabyte.
  • Model space only — paper-space layouts and viewports are not drawn.
  • Non-Latin text is skipped unless an SHX font is named that the writer can stroke; the result card lists anything left out.
  • Attached raster images print as a placeholder frame; ACIS solids are omitted.
  • The output is fitted to the page and is not to scale.

DXF to PDF — frequently asked questions

My DXF is for a laser cutter — why would I want a PDF?

To show someone the part without handing over the cut file. A PDF is the safest thing to send with a quote request or to a customer for approval: it opens on any phone, cannot be accidentally cut from, and — because this converter writes vector strokes, not pixels — it still shows a clean outline when they zoom in on a joint.

Will the PDF be at 1:1 so I can print a template?

No. The drawing is fitted to the sheet you chose, which is what a review copy needs and what a template must not be. For a full-size paper template, open the DXF in the free viewer — it is a complete CAD — and plot at 1:1 from there, choosing a paper size the part fits on.

The colours in my DXF mean cut, score and engrave. Do they survive?

Yes, unless you ask for black lines. Each entity prints in its own colour, or its layer's colour when it is set ByLayer, so red cut lines stay red and blue engraving stays blue. If the colours are meaningless on paper, tick “Black lines only” and every stroke prints black, which reads better on a monochrome printer.

Does it handle DXF files from Inkscape, Illustrator or a CAM program?

Yes. Those are ordinary R12 to R2000 ASCII DXF files, mostly polylines and splines, and they convert like any other. One thing to expect: a program that exported curves as splines gets smooth curves in the PDF, one that exported hundreds of tiny line segments gets exactly those segments — the converter does not smooth what the export did not.

What if the DXF has text in Arabic, Greek or Chinese?

Latin text — including accented characters — is written with the PDF's standard fonts. Text outside that repertoire is left out rather than printed as boxes, and the result card lists what was skipped. A DXF whose text style names an SHX font that can be stroked prints that text as vector strokes instead, in any script.
