About this block
Six main branches radiate from a central leader, each one a straight spine with short needles angled forward along both sides, so from above the tree reads as a six-pointed star rather than a round crown. The needles get shorter towards the tips, which is what stops the symbol looking mechanical. It is one insert on a layer called CAY, four units wide by 5.8 tall, in the right proportion for a young pine or spruce of about four metres spread.
Conifer symbols have to be distinguishable from broadleaf ones at a glance, and this radial form does that on planting plans, forestry layouts and ski or mountain site plans at 1:100 to 1:500. Rotate copies in steps of ten or fifteen degrees rather than sixty, because six-fold symmetry snaps back to looking identical. Keep it on the same planting layer as your other conifers so the species groups can be counted layer by layer when the schedule is checked.
