About this block

This one is dressier: a four-point star sits inside a thin circle, and the north arm is drawn long so that its tip reaches well beyond the ring while east, south and west stop short of it. Each arm is split along its centre line, one half solid and one half open, which gives the star its lit-from-one-side look. The block is named NS and carries four solid fills, one circle and twelve lines, standing 3.5 by 6.4 units overall.

Use it on presentation plans, landscape drawings and masterplans where a plain arrow looks thin against rendered linework, and keep the simple dart for construction issues. The circle gives you a centre to snap to, so place that point first and rotate about it to true north. Scale the whole symbol to plot size rather than editing the arms, and if the long north point crowds your title panel, trim it back to the ring instead of shrinking the rose.

Questions

How does it differ from the plain north arrow?

It has four arms and a surrounding circle, so it reads as a compass rose. The single dart survives small plot scales better.

How do I point it at true north?

Rotate the block about the centre of its circle by the angle between grid north and true north on your survey.
